What Is Chinese Face Reading (面相)?

A 3,000-Year-Old Art

Chinese face reading, known as Mian Xiang (面相), is an ancient form of physiognomy. Its origins “can be traced back over 3,000 years to the Zhou dynasty,” while Daoist tradition holds that it dates even further back, to the reign of the Yellow Emperor (c. 2698 BC).

The art was later codified in classical manuals — most famously the Song-dynasty text Ma Yi Shen Xiang (《麻衣神相》), still regarded as one of the most influential face reading classics — all built on the belief captured by the ancient proverb below.

相由心生 — Your appearance arises from your heart.

— Classical Chinese proverb

The Core Theory

🗻

三停 · Three Courts

The face is divided into three horizontal sections — forehead (youth), mid-face (middle age), and chin (later years). Balanced Three Courts are traditionally read as a balanced life.

🏛️

十二宮 · Twelve Palaces

Twelve positions on the face — such as the Career Palace (forehead) and Wealth Palace (nose) — are said to “symbolize the success, failure, fortune, and misfortune in a person's life.”

👁️

五官 · Five Officials

Eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth and ears each act as an “official” governing one aspect of fortune — longevity, insight, wealth, expression and reputation.

☯️

五行 · Five Elements

Faces are classified as Metal, Wood, Water, Fire or Earth types (金木水火土), each with its own character, strengths and lucky directions.
